Inside a Shenzhen pet gear factory that will run 300 units
Most factories quote you 3,000 minimum and stop replying when you push back. This one told us exactly when they will go lower, and why.
We drove out to Bao'an on a Thursday morning. The factory had agreed to let us film everything except the tooling room, which is a normal condition and one we accept.
What the floor looked like
Roughly ninety people on two lines. Webbing on one side, hardware assembly on the other. The thing we look for first is whether the QC bench sits at the end of the line or off in a separate office — if it is separate, quality checks happen after problems have already been batched.
Here it was at the end of the line, with an operator who had clearly been doing it for years.
The MOQ conversation
Their published minimum is 500 per colourway. We asked what it would actually take to get 300.
The answer was specific: 300 works if the SKU uses stock webbing colours and a logo that fits their existing print setup. Change the webbing colour and you hit the dye house minimum, which is not theirs to negotiate.
That is a useful answer. Most factories either say no or say yes and then find reasons to charge you more later.
The part we would push back on
Their tensile test rig is homemade — a frame, a winch and a gauge. It gives them a number, and the number is probably in the right range.
If you are selling into a US retailer that asks for documented pull-test results, do not submit theirs. Budget for a third-party lab. This is not a knock on the factory; it is just what a shop this size can reasonably have in-house.
