What "45 days lead time" actually means in Foshan
A cookware factory quoted us 45 days. We asked to see the schedule board. Here is where those days actually go.
Every buyer has had a lead time quote slip. The reason is almost never that the factory lied — it is that the quoted number describes production, and your order spends most of its life not in production.
Where 45 days goes
We stood in front of their schedule board and counted:
- Days 1-7: material. Stainless coil is bought in against the schedule, not held for you.
- Days 8-12: your order waits for a press slot. This is the queue, and it is invisible in every quote you will ever receive.
- Days 13-30: stamping, polishing, base bonding.
- Days 31-38: assembly, handles, packing.
- Days 39-45: inspection and loading.
The number that actually matters
Ask what the current press queue looks like, not what the lead time is. In March it was four days. In August, before peak season shipping, they told us it runs closer to fifteen.
Same factory, same quote, ten days of difference — and you only find out by asking a question nobody asks.
What we tell buyers
Take the quoted lead time, add the queue length in the month you are ordering, then add a week. If that number does not work for your launch, move your order date, not your factory.
